Some children find it difficult to fit into the structure of school and the mainly uniform diet of lessons. This mismatch can lead to conflict and a risk of exclusion. Our development centre is very personal. We acknowledge that children learn in different contexts and in different ways and in different spaces. We offer a personal curriculum, where the child is at the centre of what we do. We develop a learning path in the context of where the child is. This can have a very liberating effect on the child and the parent/carers helping them to re-engage in the learning process and re-igniting the excitement and joy of learning. The children in our care have a lay chaplain assigned to them, full time. They have a maximum of ten children to look after and are the crucial link between school, external agencies and the family. Chaplains are not based at school but meet with the child in the home, at the library and at school. Chaplains are charged with the responsibility of building the self-confidence of the child and the family. Each child is provided with a laptop computer, broadband connection at home and access to the St Jude site at www.st-judes-school.org.uk. Children will have a personal learning path negotiated with them and this will be combination of a BTEC certificate, maths and English GCSE. The delivery will be blended to suit the child and can be at our Care Centre, at home, at a work placement or a community project. The learning provided and the evidence collected is entirely digital and stored on the web site in combinations of text, graphic, video or audio. The learning activities are commissioned from the best learning resource creators to ensure active engagement.
